Бухара является одним из древнейших исторических городов на Шелковом пути; город долгое время служил центром торговли, науки, культуры и религии (ислам). Этот город более 2000 лет. Это наиболее полный пример хорошо сохранившегося исламского города в Центральной Азии, с городской ткани, которая остается в значительной степени нетронутыми. Бухара была долгое время является важным экономическим и культурным центром в Центральной Азии.
Бухара — «город музеев», содержит более 140 архитектурных памятников средневековья:
